Rob Lowe’s Emotional Journey as a Father: Sending Matthew to College

Rob Lowe, known for his roles in Unstable and 9-1-1: Lone Star, recently shared his heartfelt experience of sending his eldest son, Matthew, off to college. In a candid interview, the actor recalled the “brutal” day when he, along with his wife Sheryl, accompanied Matthew to Duke University for his freshman year.

Lowe described the moment as deeply emotional. “I was like a puddle,” he confessed, admitting that tears streamed down his face as he sat next to his son on the plane. “I had to wear dark glasses the whole time. I couldn’t even look at him.”

Though his wife Sheryl was also affected, Lowe revealed that his feelings were overwhelming in comparison. He attributed this profound reaction to the realization that it was the end of an era in his journey as a father.

Interestingly, Lowe’s experience is one shared by many parents. He reflected on how, over the years, countless dads have approached him, relating to the emotional turmoil of sending their children off to school. This shared sentiment became so common that Lowe even wrote about it in his 2014 book Love Life, where he described the raw emotions of watching his son begin a new chapter of his life.

Fast forward several years, and Lowe sees things differently. “It wasn’t the end,” he says with a smile. “They’re back and they’re not going anywhere.” As the father of two — Matthew, now 31, and John Owen, 28 — Lowe has found immense pride and joy in watching his sons grow into accomplished young men.

Matthew, a lawyer and businessman, shares a deep bond with Lowe, not just personally but professionally as well. They work closely on various business ventures, and Lowe beams with pride when talking about their collaborative efforts. Similarly, Lowe’s younger son, John Owen, co-created and stars alongside him in Unstable, their father-son dynamic on-screen mirroring their real-life relationship.

For Lowe, fatherhood remains his greatest achievement. “Becoming a dad was the best thing that’s ever happened to me,” he said. “There’s no perfect way. We all mess up in some way, but I’ve given it everything.”
